Dry fruit Ghughra Gujiya: Special Holi sweets

Gujiya, also called ghughra, is a special Holi sweet. Speciality of North Indian states like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar, Gujiya is prepared using Maida flour or suji stuffed with khoya, dry fruits and coconut. The half-moon shaped savories are really tasty and prepared on the festival of Holi or diwali. Some people also make gujiya during a special occasion at their home.

If you are also thinking to make some gujiyas at home, you can easily do so by following the steps written below. There are several ingredients that you would need. It would approximately take 40 to 50 minutes to prepare the sweet dish.


FOR COVERING          

  • 2 cups of maida
  • 3 tablespoons of edible oil and to deep fry


  • 2 ½ cups of Grated khoya or mawa
  • 3 ¼ tablespoons of desiccated coconut
  • 15 to 20 blached and chopped almonds
  • 20 raisins
  • One pinch of nutmeg powder
  • ¼ teaspoon of cardamom powder
  • 2 ½ cups of sugar (powdered)
  • ½ cup of grated chocolate

Preparation Method:

  • To prepare the covering, sieve maida and make it plain using edible oil. Add water to it and knead it into dough. Cover the prepared dough with damp cloth and keep it aside.
  • On the other side, add coconut, almonds, raisins, cardamom powder, nutmeg powder, cashew nuts to khoya and mix well.
  • Also add sugar and chocolate to it. Mix well.
  • Divide the dough into small balls and make puris.
  • Apply oil on the mould and put puris into it, placing the stuffing into it. Close the stuffing using some amount of water.
  • Put them under a moist cloth.
  • Now, heat sufficient amount of ghee in a pan and deep fry the gujias on medium heat. Make sure they turn golden brown before you take the gujias out.
  • Place the deep fried gujias on an absorbent paper so that extra ghee gets absorbed by it.
  • Before you serve, let it cool.

The sweet dish, gujia is now ready to eat!
