Tomato Dates Chutney

Whether it is for Festivals, birthdays, religious functions or potlucks, no spread can ever be complete without this Indian style tomato dates chutney. This chutney gets its aroma from the spices and fresh tomatoes, plum, succulent dates, jaggery, raisins and ground and roasted cumin.

It is eaten as the transition between savoury and dessert, it is a spicy, hot and sweet palate cleanser. This chutney not only does wonders for your taste buds but also for your health. Dates are rich in iron, which can help in treating anaemia. It also has a good amount of minerals and vitamins and is low in fat.

This chutney is easy to make can be preserved for few days.

The Ingredients are –

  • 1 bowl ripe tomatoes
  • 2 dried red chillies
  • 5-6 dates
  • ¾ teaspoon of mustard seeds
  • 2 teaspoons of grated ginger
  • 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • ¾ cup of jaggery (more if desired)
  • 2 teaspoons of grated ginger
  • 2 tablespoons of raisins
  • ¾ teaspoon of roasted ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon of salt

Preparation Method:

Discard the woody tops of the tomatoes and rinse them properly. Roughly dice and keep them aside. Pitt and quarter of the dates and keep them aside.

To a heavy bottom pan to add oil and heat it until it gets hot. To the oil add red chillies and mustard seeds. As the seeds splatter, add the tomatoes and cook them with a closed lid on medium to low heat until the tomatoes have softened, which will take approximately 10 minutes.

To the pan add jaggery, salt, dates, ground cumin and ginger and sauté on a medium-high heat with the pan uncovered for about 5 minutes until everything blends together, and the chutney is thick. Now adjust the seasonings – the chutney should be spicy-sweet in taste.

You can serve it chilled or at room temperature but never hot. The chutney can be kept refrigerated for about a week.
